Beware Neighbours DIY Disasters Warns Halifax

Following a study by the Halifax home insurance division it appears that neighbours DIY projects can affect more than themselves, as nearly 600,000 people last year had their own homes damaged after a neighbours DIY went wrong.

In monetary terms the Halifax has found that they cost in the region of GBP173 million, the biggest cause of trouble being damaged water pipes, followed by the knocking down of dividing walls. It is usually the neighbour who has caused the damage, though around 10 percent of problems are caused by professional tradesmen.

In circumstances such as these around a third of people met the costs themselves, with around a quarter of the rest sharing the cost with their neighbour. The Halifax are advising these people that they can claim on their neighbours home insurance policy, saving themselves expense and trouble.
